Received "Buck Boyds" photos the other day - 1930s 17th/21st Lancers - and found some great photos within (Thanks James)

There are some tantalizing photos of the Foreign Service Helmet and the Motto worn on it..... its just a pity that there were no real close up shots. There is a Motto of a slightly smaller size than the normal and it would be great to prove that it was for the FSH.

Do you have any pics of the 17/21st from the 1939/45 period?

    Thanks

I'm trying to trace my wife's grandfathers regt but we can't seem to find much about him, we know he served in the cavalry of the line (Poss 17th/21st Lancers) and joined in York in 1937 SN 4746525 i have tried various war records etc but really struggling, we know he trained at bovington and was injured at Caen. Any help would be really appreciated thanks

The 17th/21st didn't serve in Normandy. It's possible he was one of the 63 men transferred to form the 24th Lancers in November/December 1940, as they did. The only A. Newton in my files was wounded and captured at Thala in Tunisia on 21 February 1943.

4746525 Trooper Alfred Newton is listed as wounded in action on 10th February 1945. His unit is listed as 2nd Armoured Reinf Unit. ?

That’s him thank you so much Guy that’s great news I’m trying to trace his journey from joining up in York in 1937 till his injury in 1945 any more info/photos would really be appreciated so it looks like he was in the 17th/21st Lancers & then transfered to 2nd as a reinforcement unit which means he was wounded at Caen with them? Thank you so much again

I've checked my (24th Lancers) files and can find no trace of Tpr Newton: that means that, if he was injured at 'Caen' per your first post, it wasn't whilst with 24L. I suggest you get a copy of his Tracer Card from the Library at Bovington and/or his Service Records as that will confirm where he was, who he was with, and when everything happened.

    Gary,
You could order a copy of Alfred's tracer card from the Tank Musem at Bovington, that will detail all his regiments and transfers.
He originally enlisted in the York and Lancaster Regiment before transferring to the R.A.C.

Thank you so much for your help Guy we only have his enlistment paper which told us he joined at York with the Corps of the Cavalry of the Line but relatives told us he was in Tank Regt & got injured at Caen but we couldn’t find any info. Such a shame I didn’t check on here last week as we were at bovington last week for the Tiger show!
Thanks again I will get in touch with the museum Gary
