The 18th Div, sailed from Scotland as convoy CT5 in October 1941, in British/ Allied ships. Upon reaching Nova Scotia all the British troops transferred to American troopships. This then sailed on 09.11.41 with American destroyer escorts, for Africa. (later to be diverted to Singapore). This was now convoy WS12X.

This is ONE MONTH before America entered the war.

Would this convoy have been a legitimate wartime target for German U-boats ?

What was America expecting to happen ? Was their intention to enter the war at this point?

From what I've read , the first US warship sunk by a U-boat was USS Reuben James in October 41.

US Navy involved against U-boats in April 41
