12 lbs was the weight of the uniform alone! With the rest of the kit, its no wonder my Dad had such a sore back for the rest of his life.
It's certainly a sobering thought to realise how far we've since come in materials technology and human ergonomic understanding. As a wild-country backpacker, for instance, I'm always appalled by old films referring to the classic pear-drop Bergen rucksack as if it were the bee's knees - though, truth told in comparison to modern designs, a veritable instrument of torture. And what's perhaps even more sobering is that our forebears probably knew a heck of a lot better how to correctly load up a horse than a man !
Not even tagged '1939 Register' but maybe welcome news here ...A: We're having a Free Weekend! | News | findmypast.co.uk (from noon tomorrow)B: Second World War prisoner of war records now online - The National Archives(online at FMP, that is, so hopefully also free this w/e)C: Find out about the chimp who went to war - The National Archives
Well, so much for that idea ! Absolutely coincidentally, I had occasion to ring FMP's main Customer Support desk* about another matter** yesterday and took the opportunity to ask - their Sophie Shackleton philosophically confessed to also being kept in the dark ! It seems we're not the only ones being treated as mushrooms. * Just in case you want to take note, since they don't see fit to advertise it on their website, from Sophie's confirmatory e-mail: ** Victorian service record set stalling at 16th image of at least 21 - with user-uncorrectable 'URL-corruption' as diagnostic clue
The importance of the 1939 Register to family historians | News | findmypast.co.uk Oh so very dear - they're still trying to whet our appetites but, with less than 3 months of this year left, just amounting to yet more empty talk without any firm mention of the release date we really want to know. It's almost as if their advertising staff daren't ask the key question on our behalf - assuming, that is, that they even have the nous to realise the sitiuation as we see it ! I'd also question, given An explanation of redaction in the 1939 register | News | findmypast.co.uk, their glib statement that "the 1939 Register is going to give you the dates of birth of everyone in the house". Well, maybe eventually, but I reckon these clots are laying themselves open to accusations of false advertising ... Steve PS: If any LinkedIn member would like to ask her directly ... Gloucestershire Family History Society are doing a two hour presentation about the 1939 Register on the 6th November. For those who live in or near to Gloucester, details as follows:-
Thanks for and good luck with that but, on seeing A presentation on the launch on the 1939 Register on Find My Past | GFHS, I can only hope their FMP PR guest presenter - Myko Clelland | LinkedIn - delivers substantially more than FMP's blog over those 2hrs in terms of hard & useful facts: For me the 200m round-trip is a lucky deterrent as I'd otherwise be sorely tested not to treat him as a whipping-boy for his employer's sins !
