Hi all, Metal detecting find in central New South Wales, Australia. Vehicle plate, heavy brass. 18cm x 8 cm. Raised words on plate are: LORRY 4WHld SEARCHLIGHT No 1 MK 11. 1940. PRC CONTRACT No B.5854. W.D No (This section is blank), WT 4-2-0-0 Can anyone please shed light on what this lorry was, make etc. I'd love an image to go with the plate. I think it's important to remember all these tiny parts of the whole huge story. I'm ex-Brit 1st Royal Tank Regiment so any of my finds with a military flavour get me all a -flutter. I look forward to any comms. Many thanks.
It seems that a number of different vehicles were used as searchlight lorries. The main three were: Truck, 4 ton, 4 x 2, Searchlight, Tilling-Stevens Truck, 3 ton, 6 x 4, Searchlight, Guy FBAX Truck, 3 ton, 4 x 2, Searchlight, Thorneycroft ZS/TC4 It could of course be a locally produced vehicle. There were a number of Australian Pattern gun tractors, maybe they produced a searchlight truck as well.
