Are there any clues to the addressee's unit on the envelope?
Is that 20115 a feldpost number that can somehow be translated? As I can't see any other identifiers, or an address in the conventional sense on there.

Not something I know much about.
Wonder if this site may offer any help.

(I'll ask the lady about the contents K)

May be stating the obvious but the letter is from Frau Stoiber, so his wife or his mother. Her address is at the top of the back of the envelope... Abs = absender = sender
And I think AHD is right with his first name. Miellen an der Lahn perhaps?

It could be the Feldpostnummer of the 2 Co., Kradschützenbtl. 15. Would make sense since it was part of the 15. Pz.Div., which was in Africa in 1941.

That has to be right doesn't it?
    Kradschützen? - Motorcycle Infantry?

(I lost a list of Feldpost numbers somewhere in the Internet, or it's still lurking on the hard drive somewhere, but it didn't have as much detail - that's a handy site K).

I don't speak German but I think, from the numbers, you are on the right track:

    Hope this helps.

I copied the information available up to Tuesday evening and passed it over to a Legion friend who was vice consul here in Berlin for many years.

He has just emailed me to say that he had been in contact with a Herr Schutzky of the Deutsche Dienstelle, Eichborndamm 179, 13403 Berlin where all the records of former German Military Personnel are kept. He has said that without the date and place of birth of Herr Stoiber they would have difficult in tracing him. As you can imagine they have millions of records and, of course, the name of "Otto Stoiber" is common.

Tomorrow I will be in contact with the Reservists as we are invited to share some of their stands for the Christmas Market in Kladow.

I may be able to get some further information then and will repost.

    Regards
    Tom

Thank you. I had seen this but did not want to assume he was the onle Lahn resident with that name.

Not a soldier just the letter, which was found by my late father-in-law,(who I never met, as he died before I met my late husband). Walter Harrison Houghton was the person who found it.

Chantry, could you post the letter? I'm sure it would be interesting and maybe we could find out more about who sent and received it.

Try contacting Smudger in Berlin. He might have some useful contacts via the RBL there. Be fascinating to see how this ones pans out.

Are you able to help please. I have come across 2 Otto Stoiber s one from Miltach another from Muhldorff? I am inable to find second place? Both appeared to be in Latvia/ Russia later?

    Chantry,

Today I spoke with an officer of the Reservists. He has taken my copies of the envelope and other details I printed out from the forum.

Tomorrow he will make contact with another Reservist who is a collector of old WW2 Letters and is considered to be somewhat of an expert.

I await any information, positive or negative, but will post when I have it.

I cannot say the time scale, perhaps a week or so, but it is not forgotten.

    Regards
    Tom

This evening I spoke to my contact, Winfried, and he has so far come up negative.
But he has all the details and is making enquiries in the Koblenz area where the letter originated.

I await any further informtion from Winfried and will post when received.

    Regards
    Tom

    Robert,

    You are a Prophet:D.

My retired Bundeswehr Officer and friend has just contacted me to say that he been speaking to a lady who we believe to be the daughter of Otto Stoiber.

She has confirmed the details of the Australian POW Camp and we are 99.9% certain that this is the Next of kin.

He is providing all the details for me on our next Wednesday meeting at the Legion.

I will then pass these on to Adam, who has the details of the holder of the letter and both parties should be able to liase with each other.

    Regards
    Tom

    Good lord.
Tom, you and your mate are 'the men'.
I'll email 'Chantry', but hopefully she'll pick up on the thread in the meantime.
(is it OK if I pass on your email to her?).

If this proves to be the right target found then I'm genuinely impressed.
Isn't the Internet an odd thing?..
