    Hi

I have just joined this forum on what would have been my Grandfathers 90th Birthday

I will keep this short for now, as I intended to speak in more detail with those who make contact

My Grandfather served in Normandy, The Ardennes, The Rhine Crossings, Germany and Palestine

I have photograghs which I wish to share, as I am sure you do too, which may contain pictures of your relatives as well as accounts from my grandfather

    Kind Regards

    Jay

    Hello Jay,

As per my PM, I think that "airbornemedic" on this forum may be your best bet. If you'd like a copy of the pic I mentioned then PM me and I'll send it to you.

    Best regards...........:)

    Hello Jay

I look forward to hearing your Grandfather's story.

A funny tale that sticks in my mind is the antics of a Padre who would visit the 195 dressing station in Ranville contained in this Colonel John Watts obituary.

    Colonel John Watts

Although not named I believe it was Father M. McGowan attached to 195 (Para) Field Ambulance.

Which Brigade was the 195th Field Ambulance normally attached to?

6th Airlanding Brigade of the 6th Airborne Division

@ Cee - Thank you for the link to that article, I have the offical accounts for D-Day but not this humoured version.

My grandad was wounded with a GSW to the thigh upon landing in Op Varstiy but remained on duty.

    Hi Cee,

You're not thinking of Rev Daniel McGowan are you? He was Padre to 16th PFA at Arnhem..........

    Best regards........:)

I think it is unlikely it was Daniel McGowan as apart form the fact that I have pictures of him with the other officers of 133 PFA taken at Oakham in July 1944 the official designation of 195 was an airlanding FA....

In any case Jay, welcome to the forum......

    Regarding Father McGowan ...

It appears to be a different McGowan also a Catholic Padre. If you look towards the bottom of this page under 6th Air-landing Brigade you will see:

Capt. / Father M McGowan, att. 195 (Para) Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps

ParaData also has a M. McGowan here with the proper "Airlanding Field Ambulance" designation.

    195th Airlanding Field Ambulance
Chaplain; Rev Fr M McGowan (RC)

As It turns out the Reverend Maurice McGowan was the brother of Reverend Daniel McGowan:

Chaplain Maurice McGowan, MBE - ParaData

    Regards ...

Jay, just in case you don't have it I'll include here an article written by the Grandson of Lieutenant Colonel Gilliland. The link to the The Independent page has gone dead so I'll throw up the screen shot taken as an alternative.

This was interesting story for me as it established the exact location of the building used by 195 RAMC after D-Day which was formerly a German HQ. The building itself is a small chateau and you have to wonder how useful it would have been as an HQ. Being east of Ranville (at that time) in Le Mariquet area it was close to a number of exit roads.

    Cee - Thanks for that

I have the full version of that account from 04/04/44 - 09/09/44

My grandfather delivered the baby boy from the 23yr old french woman. He always wondered what happened to the boy, if he survived the war, and what became of him

I am going to contact the parishs of Ranville and Le Mariquet to see if I can trace him or a relative.
