1 A&SH came to Italy later than most. They joined 19 Indian Brigade in 4 Indian Division in early 44 having to take over from 1/5 Essex who had suffered appalling casualties in the crossing of the Trigno, the crossing of the Sangro and the fight for Villa Grande near Ortona. 1 A&SH's first big battle was the Fourth Battle of Cassino on 11 May 44.
