What was your grandad's name and rank while with the 1st Lincolns? I have the Lincolnshire Regimental history including the period you are speaking about, before 1939. I can copy sections of the 1929-30 period if you wish.

I will make copies of the 1st Lincolnshire Regiment's service from 1919 to 1939 and post them tomorrow on this thread so you can see some details of his service. It is always a good idea to obtain his service records so you can have some more details. See here about obtaining service records:

That’s brilliant. Thanks so much. All I know is he joined up in the 1920s, was in Ireland at some stage as think that’s where he met my grandmother, dad was born in 1928 at tidworth military base, then grandad was in China then Hong Kong then India before returning for the war. He was in France at Dunkirk receiving shrapnel wounds and had to be in hospital. Dad and his mother didn’t here from him for six months. But need to find out when he went back France etc. He finished the war and worked in the civil service I think dying in 1974. I’ve recently been going through pictures he took in battle in China. Amazing. Only small ones but these are nearly 100 years old!! He was a keen photographer...all info would be great. This forum is amazing. My next task is locating the boarding school in mount arbu Rajasthan where dad went to school 1936-1939...determined to go to India to retrace his early life

The chapter on the Lincolnshire Regiment 1919-39 is too large to post. I have sent a link to member JFSheen so that he can download the chapter. If anyone else is interested in this chapter, then start a conversation with me and I will send you the download link.

I've done some research for another person, and here are some places where the 1st battalion were based. He applied for his relatives service records before I could confirm where he served.

    1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment)

    UK: 27 May 1929 – 3 February 1930

    Gibralter: 4 February 1930 – 13 October 1931

    Shanghai: 14 October 1931 – 29 September 1932

    Hongkong: 30 September 1932 – 2 January 1936

    India: 3 January 1936 – 10 November 1938

This short History of 1 Lincolns 1939 - 1946 was written by L.C. Gates. (He was a Major in my Dad's regiment - 7 Lincolns/102 LAA Regiment). Send me a private message and I'll email a copy to you (75 pages).

He's a Lincolnshire Regiment man, that's for sure. The X in the photo means they were the 10th Regiment in the British Army. Formed in 1685.

His time in Shanghai 1931/1932 is an extremely interesting aspect of British military presence in China. He obviously witnessed the 'Shanghai Incident' a 5 week battle between the Chinese & the Japanese in Chapei just outside the International Settlement which ended with Japanese aircraft strafing Chinese civilians. You can see results of the damage on the web-site, Historical Photographs of China (HPC) - see for example, Ep01-328. HPC would be v. interested to see your photographs & to upload some onto the web-site as part of the Regimental Museums China Photographs Project, of which I'm the Co-ordinator.
