Discussion in '53rd (Welsh) Division' started by Stewart Coupar, Jun 27, 2020.

  1. Hello,
Hope someone can help, I was wondering if anyone knew what the 1st HLI were doing on the 14th-15th April 1945? A chap I am trying to research was wounded on the 14th.
    Many thanks,
    Stewart

  6. Hi,
Thanks for posting the pages from the Regimental History, it makes interesting reading. It is a pity they do not go into a bit more detail. In With The Jocks there is a good account of fighting outside Ibbenburgen, which even though is a different unit and Division still gives a vivid idea of what it was like being in an infantry platoon in the action. I will need to search the IWM collection to see if they have any Veterans accounts or photos/film from the period.
One last question, did the HLI wear a patch of MacKenzie tartan on their BD's or did they wear a shoulder title with the Welsh Div flash?
Many thanks to you both for all of your efforts and help.

Stewart - had Covid19 not delayed my book for a year, you could have read considerable detail about what 1 HLI were up to 14-15 Apr 45. The map from Delaforce’s book shown at post #3 is one I drew for my earlier book No Triumphant Procession (don’t remember anyone seeking my permission but no matter!). If you can get a copy of NTP (copies can still be bought online) then it will provide you with what I hope will be good information. If not, my next book (Theirs the Strife) should hopefully be out next Spring. Do get back to me if I can help you further.

Oh yes just dug out my copy that was hidden behind some other books & found it page 171.
Bit cheeky of them using it without asking.
Not like you would have been hard to track down back then.

Hidden behind some other books? Surely it holds centre place on the bookshelf so that it is available for daily reference!:)

Stewart - I should have thought of it earlier but I have a spare copy of NTP, which I would be delighted to let you have at a price below those advertised on Amazon. I will sign it too! We will PM if you are interested.
Are you able to name the soldier you are researching?
