King's.jpg HQ Coy, 1st King's Regiment (Liverpool). Dehra Dun 1945. Photograph kindly supplied by Greg McCoag, the son of 3783381 Pte Gregory J McCoag, 1st King's Regiment, Liverpool and uploaded with his permission..

The names are difficult to read as this is a photograph of the original photograph. I have matched a vast number of the names from the H.Q. Coy list on the Defence Medal Roll, please see following posts.

    Simon,

Some painstaking work done listing these soldiers. There are a number of men I can add information about. Firstly, six of the above, J. Scott, D. Boylen, H. Gosling, A. Wooley, H. Fordy and G. Coyne were Commandos and feature on this page on my website:

    DLI Commandos

    R. Shaw and S. LLoyd feature in the 13KLR war diaries for 1944-45, but cannot be confirmed on Longcloth. You know about FG. Thompson already. William Crowhurst was one of the men airlifted to safety aboard the rescue Dakota in April 1943. He was a member of 8 Column and T. Kemple is anecdotally mentioned in a debrief for Longcloth and was another member of 8 Column.

Hope this will be of some use.

    Steve,

some fascinating reading regarding the DLI Commando draft and I have updated my spread sheet accordingly, thank you for pointing me in the right direction. However, it brings me to the fundamental problem with the Defence Medal roll list which is: to be able to separate those on the list who served on Operation Thursday from those who didn't but who transferred to the 1/King's after Longcloth. Fundamentally, do they count towards the 800+ men who flew into Burma in March 1944 or, do I discount them because they were back in the depot during Thursday. I suspect that I know the answer.

It seems the only easily obtainable certified proof that a man was one of the 800 is if he is on the CWGC database, a casualty list, a PoW list or gave evidence regarding a missing comrade. Secondary evidence in the form of a mention in an article or a book, or evidence from families is useful but hard to come by. Finally I suspect that an awful lot of men who served with the Chindits will not be identifiable until such time as their service records are in the public domain.

As you can guess, I have hit a wall with the last 150 names but as Norman Stanley Fletcher used to say, "little victories, Godber, little victories".

    Simon,

I agree with you're gut feeling. So few men served on both expeditions, even though you would think that a group of commandos from Chindit 1, would be a must for the second expedition. I've just sent you an email which might get you over the wall a couple of steps.

I'm glad it's helped you! I wrote it this time last year with a lot of help from this forum, especially the people in this thread. Until the start of 2016 I had no real idea what my grandad did in the war. He only told us a few stories, but one was about shaking Wingates hand before he (Wingate) boarded a plane.

Just to confirm my Dad - Pte Moneypenny Matthew, 3776963 - is actually at the right hand end of that row.

Could I ask about the Newton in the photo?

We though this was my Grandad James Newton who was in Dehra Dun in 1945. He was admitted to CMH Dehra Dun, India on 25th June, and discharged from CMH Dehra Dun to 1st Battalion, Kings three weeks later on 14th July. It also looks like him, we think! But you have him as Pte R Newton, so I'm not sure!

If Grandad's army number was 3456855 if you have any records which that might match against?

Do you know if James Newton served in A Coy? I have a total of three Newtons on my list, one on the official Casualty list as wounded, one on the Defence Medal Roll and your grandfather, James. I don't yet have a copy of the Defence Medal Roll for A or B Coys but I am working on locating them.

  15. Hi all

Having completed my father's story, I'm now starting to look for my friend's Uncle, Michael O'Donnell. She believes he had a Burma Star medal so has presumed he was in the Chindits in Burma. Unfortunately she has absolutely nothing else on him except his birth year and place which is 1917 in Liverpool.

Any ideas where I can start please? I've tried FWR, Ancestry and a few Burma/Chindit websites but I'm not finding him. I've had a look through the photographs and lists above but can't see him there either.

    Any suggestions gratefully received!

    Thanks,
    Lynne

Lynne, he is not on my database but as it is not yet complete it doesn't mean that he shouldn't be. Do you know for certain that he served with the King's Regiment?

I see my father Pte Josiah Glover in the front row, correctly labelled.

I will make time to review this post, but I am more likely to ask than answer questions.

Welcome to the forum. I am pleased that you have confirmed that your father is in the 'A' Coy photograph. Could you please give us some further details regarding his service? Do you have his Army Number and can you confirm that he took part in Operation Thursday.? I have a very strong feeling that he is someone who needs to be added to my database.
