    For conspicuous gallantry and devotion during lengthy operations, when he was largely responsible for consolidating posi- tions gained, constructing strong points and trenches in most exposed positions, and, not- withstanding heavy casualties, by his courage and skill he enabled the work to be successfully performed and the positions rendered secure.
