Aussies'll do anything to big up the Aussie contribution!:D
Funnily enough I suggested that since its being filmed in NZ that Mr Fry had changed it to Digger to give it an ANZAC connotation on one of my other forums... :D

A report of a greyhound racing betting swindle which involved a dog called White Nigger.

That term is not unknown on Radio 2 - they've never censored Oliver's Army whenever I've heard it.

Later that year, a Conservative MP also called Herbert Morrison ......

Hundreds of examples of the use of this in Hansard.

If they do a remake of Dambusters I certainly hope they leave all of the Hollywood stuff out of it. Just get on with the original/historical fact. Why change it?
Focus should be on the brave crews, with their low flying training exploits.
I doubt if it will be made though....

Oh, no doubt. It was a pretty standard saying when I was growing up.

It would be interesting to know whether the N-word is now considered Unparliamentary Language these days: I gather there used to be a list in Erskine May, but it's been dropped.

O/T: while hunting for this I discovered you can't call a Canadian MP a blatherskite in their House of Commons! Considering it's a word which could describe just about any politician anywhere I find that distinctly unfair.

I wonder if Derwent Water dam will be the scene for the training, as in reality.

I think I may have an alternate name for Gibbo's black dog. Just cast one of those light honey coloured Lab's as his pet and call it 'Wigger'. Whaddya think of that?

As a further slight on the historical facts, apparently the American release is being re-named 'The Bombers of Scampton County'. I nearly choked on my toast and marmalade when I read that this morning I can tell you...

Stephen Fry, who is writing the film's screenplay, said there was "no question in America that you could ever have a dog called the N-word".

I really don't know why we bother. The Yanks are a thousand times worse.

And if The Green Lantern is Hollywood's take on The Blue Lamp, I fear for Dambusters II...

Just discovered this thread: my Mum, who was a Nurse during WWII, knew Guy Gibson. On one occasion she did an X-Ray of his ankle after a minor stumble while out drinking and, more relevant to the interests of this site, used to take his dog for walks along with his Cocker Spaniel friend 'Brandy'. If the remake film ever gets made they should keep the N***** name....and don't forget 'Brandy'.

I am actually dreading this, I have a feeling it may turn out to be a Hollywood history rewritten version. Hopefully not.

Glad to hear there seems to be some progress but disappointed flying scenes (most if not all) will be CGI. I know pro film graphics are always improving but I tend to find them easy to spot and generally over emphasise the dramatic elements that are too difficult to do in real film eg extreme low-flying.
I am hopeful this might be a worthy successor to the 'original' film but have my doubts.

There are a few airworthy Lancs left, are there not?

Just the two, our own BBMF one and another in Canada, although a third (Panton Brothers, Lincolnshire) might be made airworthy again.

Only two left flying: one with the BBMF in the UK (RAF Coningsby Lincolnshire) and one in Canada. Also another in Lincolnshire which currently taxis only but may soon be returned to fully flying condition (recent announcement by its private owners who have obtained 'new' engines etc).

    Hi everybody,

The new Dambusters film will be going ahead in the very near future.

Stephen Fry has written the screen play and it will be produced by Peter Jackson, the man behind the Lord of the Rings and most recently the Hobbit.

The 1950s film starring Richard Todd and Sir Michael Redgrave is regarded as a classic.

So, Should there be a Dambusters remake or should it be left alone?

There is without question the potential here for another cinema classic, especially with the big production budget and modern special effects.

    But

This could also end up as just another remake flop, a jazzed up Hollywood type production that losses all credibility. Relying more on special effects and dramatic overkill than the very matter of fact type of British attitude of the time.

I would love to know what you think!
