    Hello,

I'm researching the family tree of my Great Great Uncle, who was a POW at Stalag 20b.

I have got some information about him but can't find any military records for him aside from his POW listing.

Eli Augustus S Morrison was born on 9 September 1922 in Pontardawe, Glamorganshire.

    E S Morrison 2360729 Signalman 1940 Railway Survey Company
E S Morrison 2360729 Signalman 1940 Royal Corps Of Signals
    E S Morrison 2360729 Signalman 1945 Royal Signals
E S Morrison 2360729 Signalman 1945 Royal Corps Of Signals

    Name: E S Morrison
    Rank: Sgm. (Sergeant Major?)
    Army Number: 2360 729
    Regiment: Royal Signals
    POW Number: 7542
    Camp Type: Stalag
    Camp Number: XX-B (20-B)
    Camp Location: Malbork, Poland
Record Office: Royal Signals Record Office, Caversham, Reading, Berkshire.

The only other information I have is that he married the Dutch nurse, who was looking after him in a hospital in Amsterdam when he was a POW (or shortly afterwards).

He died on 9 October 1987 in Swansea.

I'd love to learn more about him, such as where he was captured or how he ended up (possibly) in Amsterdam, but am clueless where to look, etc.

I would really appreciate any help or guidance, as I am new to family history research (unfortunately).

Many thanks for any help anyone can provide.

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

You ought to apply to UK MOD for his service papers via this link -

Requests for personal data and service records: a detailed guide

You ought to apply to Swiss Red Cross 25th May for his POW records via this link -

Requests for information about people held during Spanish Civil War or Second World War: Quarterly limit reached

Check the site for the online application form at 8am on the day. You need to complete and submit it vey quickly as the application window usually closes within 2 hours of opening. It’s a free service and you usually get a reply not less than 4 months later.

Members with access to FMP may post details of his date of capture and release from the official casualty lists.

After the current emergency ends you could consider a search of National Archives to see if he completed a Liberation Questionnaire on his arrival in England.

    Good Luck

    Steve

Many thanks for the prompt response and guidance Steve - much appreciated.

The Swiss Red Cross link you kindly provided, also pointed me in the direction of the Arolsen Archives (Arolsen Archives - International Center on Nazi Persecution) which enabled me to find more details on the Dutch nurse Eli married on his return to Wales!

Thank you so much for your help.

    Hi,

Thanks for the tip about the Arolsen archive.

I had a quick look for POW war crimes and read a couple of US investigation files this afternoon.

I’ll have to look and see if there are any British files.

    Good Luck with your search.

    Steve
