    1st Guards Brigade, 78th Division, 5 Corps
23953 Captain, Temporary Major Kenneth Edward Mortimer TUFNELL, 3rd Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS

On 5th February 1943 Major TUFNELL's Company was ordered to attack DJEBEL ALLILIGA from his position on DJEBEL MANSOUR in conjunction with the rest of the Battalion on his Right flank. This Company had to attack up a very rocky and precipitous hillside which was liberally strewn with booby traps.

On the way up seven or eight machine gun posts were encountered, which were overcome one by one, at the same time fire was brought to bear on them from the Left rear and the situation became very difficult.

In spite of the opposition and two Officers and thirty Other Ranks casualties inflicted on his Company, Major TUFNELL, although slightly wounded himself, led them on to their objective which they consolidated.

Throughout this operation Major TUFNELL's sill and initiative was of a very high order, which was reflected in the magnificent way his men fought. It was through his determination and encouragement that his Company finally gained their objective. When the position had to be finally evacuated, Major TUFNELL withdrew them in good order, with every weapon intact, out of a very dangerous situation.

I recommend that Major TUFNELL to be awarded the M.C.

    Signed A.G.W. HEBER-PERCY, Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 3rd Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS

Strongly recommended for immediate award Major TUFNELL has displayed outstanding leadership and courage under heavy fire.

Signed V. COPLAND-GRIFFITHS, Brigadier, Commanding, 1st Guards Brigade

    Granted an Immediate M.C.
