    Hello
I'm trying to reach out to someone who knows about the Grenadier guards. Charles Stanley Kiddy was killed on the 1sy May 1940 and his burial at De Panne Communal Cemetery doesn't take a genius to work out he died during the chaotic BEF retreat to Dunkirk.

My question is his CWGC headstone doesn't carry details of which Battalion he was with and so am a bit stuck as to place his death in context.
    .
I've seen different posts here that show the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions seem to be down in the Croix area around that day but then I've read so much detail about how chaotic that time was and so can't rule out him getting separated from his Battalion. If anyone can provide some pointers I'd certainly appreciate it.
    TIA

    By 'eck that was quick.
It has made me check the dates, turns out I had it as 1st of May when it's actually 31st (with an asterisk) and has confirm he DoW which could have been sustained at any time I suppose but a Battalion X List has made me even more curious.
    Thank you for that.

    Hi,

Possibly X1 - Extra Regimentally Employed - on a “staff” job at Brigade, Divisional, Corps or BEF HQ?

Could be a servant to a GG officer employed outside the regiment?

I had ann” Old Contemptible” great uncle in CG WW1 who was in Italy 1918. No CG battalions there so my assumption has always been he was an officers servant.

Can't help with battalion but some info.

Firstly would be helpful to edit your first post with the date of death i.e. 31/5 - 1/6 1940 also useful to include a link to the CWGC record as you didn't quote a service number that's perhaps where we all head of first of all to get details, in this case 2615082.
Guardsman Charles Stanley Kiddy | War Casualty Details 2082235 | CWGC

Note that he was first posted missing in a casualty list dated 12/7/40, then missing believed killed, list dated 1/10/40, and finally died on list dated 30/6/41. His name was also circulated on lists sent to POW camps seeking information on missing servicemen.

    Thanks Jim.

As Lord Gort VC, GOC BEF, was ex GG he likely chose GG as GHQ Defence Company.

De Panne village was the site of the final General Headquarters of the BEF in 1940.

Thanks for that, I'm glad it explains his fathers job.
Charles was born in Suffolk, educated in Thame, parents lived pre-war on the Isle of Wight and the CWGC notification sent to a remote village in West Leicestershire. Charles Snr certainly got about but then a gamekeeper would. Shackerstone is close to the old Gopsall Hall (demolished in 1952) that used to be the seat of Lord Howe and it appears to have been a long time hunting spot used by King Edward VII and Kaiser Wilhelm if local legend is to be believed.
