His service records show him reaching Allied lines in June 1944. In his memoirs he says he was posted to Scotland first , probably Stobs Camp then eventually back Windsor. 6 Bn Gren Guards were disbanded in Dec 1944 I believe but he was only demobbed in 1946. His service records don't show any postings after his return from Italy. Is there any way of finding which Bn he was posted to in 1945 after 6 Bn.
    Thanks.

    Hi,

It is very difficult to say where he went if his service record is blank on the subject.

Have you looked in the Regimental History to see what it says about where men were posted on disbandment - dbf posted a link for you previously.

The postings that spring to mind for an A1 man - before GG Battalions returned from Europe post hostilities - are GG Training Battalion, Westminster Garrison Battalion or a posting to Guards Depot as permanent staff. Some returning POW were posted to POW camps or Ordnance depots (RAOC) on guard duties pending demobilisation.

If he had a lower medical classification he could’ve been posted on sedentary duties either within or outside the regiment.

If you post the service record members may be able to spot something you may have missed.

You could look for his WW2 Campaign Medal application form on Forces War Records and if he submitted an application it may show his last posting.

    Thanks Steve,

He returned from Italy after escaping in Sept 44. He just says he was sent back to Scotland, then to Windsor, but no timeline. He was demobbed some 19 months after arriving home. He might have been at Stobs Camp for most of that time then down to Windsor just prior to demob. I will have a look at Forces War Records as suggested.

    Cheers
