Hi, I've just joined the Forum so I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask my question! Anyway what I'm trying to find out is - where my farther was injured in Sicily in August 1943. My father, Alan Walter Woods (267935) was part of 425 Tipper Company RASC and he landed in Sicily on 19th July 1943 (from his MOD war records). The next entry is the 11th August 1943 when he was admitted to 5 Canadian General Hospital (XII List). On the 14th August 1943 he was transferred 33 (ME) General Hospital, on the 15th Aug 1943 to 2 (NZ) General Hospital, on 2nd Sept to 42 General Hospital and on 6th Sept to 9 General Hospital and finally discharged on 10th Sept 1943 on sick leave. My father told me, when he was alive, that he was injured by an antipersonnel bomb dropped by a German plane, but I never asked where this happened. Any help will be much appreciated, in particular as I will be going on holiday to Sicily in September and I would like to visit where he would have been. Thanks Richard Woods
Hi, Welcome to the forum. You may have been better starting a stand alone topic. I’ll ask a MOD to move your post into its own topic. The answer to your question will likely be in his unit War Diary held at the U.K. National Archives in London. If you have a look on FMP you may be able to confirm the date his injury was sustained as they have copies of the WW2 official casualty lists. Several members offer a look up and copying service if you can’t get to Kew yourself. Good Luck Steve
You need a copy of WO 169/11886 Royal Army Service Corps: 425 Company (RASC) - 1943 July- Dec. Also, see attached where they are mentioned in the order of battle for Operation Husky. Good luck PS - there is a good chance there will be diaries for the medical establishments as well and these will record where they were located
Casualty List No 1220 (Officers) dated 24 August 1943 Expeditionary Forces/Middle East/Sicily/Wounded Royal Army Service Corps Woods 2nd Lt AW 267935 11 August 1943 This is of course the same day he was admitted to hospital. Casualty lists give no more information so you will need to refer to war diaries etc.
Thanks for your help. It looks like a trip to Kew is the next step. I've uploaded a photo from my father's album which shows 425 Tipper Coy R.A.S.C. (officers & senior N.C.Os.) in June 1943 prior to service overseas. My father 2/Lt. A. Woods is sitting on the RHS of the front row. Hopefully this photo will be of use to others in the forum. I'll keep the forum updated with anything I find. Thanks again Richard
Thanks Tony for this info. A trip to Kew is my next action. Please see the photo of 425 Tipper Company I've just posted on the forum. Regards Richard
Thanks for the info. It's always good to see original documents when doing any research. regards Richard
