My Dad was in 273 Squadron . I have been reading about the efforts of 273 Squadron Association to get a badge. Is it possible to make contact with the Association ?

    Thanks

    Hi Johnsonsyard,

There is not much information about 273 Squadron but I am also interested in it. Ian Norman Bayles was the Squadron Leader from Dec 43 to April 45 . Do you have photos from the time your father spent with the Squadron?

HI Elizabeth , What is your connection to 273 Squadron. ? did you have a relative who was there ? My Dad was a photographer with the Squadron so you'd think I'd have lots of photos . Well my Dad had a few albums ...................you'd better sit down now................ unfortunately my old mother through them out after he died . I remember seeing them . Spitfires , captured Jap planes , Rangoon etc. At the moment I am researching my Dads Service history which parallels that of 273 as well. Some of the information is not always accurate. Using what my dad told me and info from letters.
    regards

    Nick

    Hi the pair of you...

It may be a long shot but as Johnsonsyard's dad was an "official" snapper you might get some assistance from this site in finding some of his photos...?

Hi Enbubble81 , you mention 272 Squadron , may have got this wrong but did you mean 273 Squadron . If so I would love to see any photos you have as mine were all lost . What did your grandfather do in the Squadron ? Have already researched a good bit about them . may be able to help.

    Hi Nick
    I've attached a photo it's from a menu when 7152 S.E (Service Echelon) was disbanded in 1946, 152 Sqn & 273 Squadron merged into 7152 S.E in Burma.

    Cheers
    Rob...

My dad was in 273 squadron at China Bay in 1941 till 1943. He had been awarded the DFM with 49 squadron prior to joining 273 squadron. He was a wireless operator/air gunner. I have his log book with all the flights he did out of china bay. Unfortunately my father died 12th August 2011 (aged 89) having retired from the RAF in 1976 as squadron leader.

My mum&dad did attend the 273 squadron reunion that went out to Sri Lanka.

    Hi
I have just registered on this site, my Dad Matthew Crossan was in 273 squadron, he was a member of the 273 squadron family and attended many reunions which were organised by Jane Pelling. Since the death of my dad in 1995 I had kept in contact (albeit only by Christmas cards) with Jane, however for the past few years I have not heard anything from her. The suqadron badge was inaugurated in St Celment Danes church in 1996 and my brother and I attended the ceremony. I have a few documents which my dad brought back from the war. Reg Samson has written a book, The Bamboo Workshop about the war in Burma, which you may find of interest.
I'm happy for you to contact me and share information. I also have a list of the members of the squadron.

Hi Eve , My father was Frank Hardy , a photographer with 273 Squadron in Burma. He was with them from 1944 and only parted company when they went off to Bangkok and Saigon. His route took him to Singapore with 273 Servicing Echelon with Operation Tiderace. I spent a good part of last year piecing together his war history from 1939 to 1946 . In Burma he had his own Photographers caravan to develop the film from the Spitfires . He was injured in an air raid and transported by the hospital ship Rajula to Calcutta and on to Darjeeling and later returned on his own by tramp steamer to 273 Squadron.

It was only after he died that I learnt about 7273 Squadron association . My dad did not say a lot about his time out there. I think he saw things that he could not talk about.

I would be very interested to know any information about the Squadron.

    Regards

    Hello!
I am researching a documentary film which takes place in Burma at the end of the Second World War and have come across the name George Shenton, who was a pilot with the 273 squadron. I am trying to find out a bit more about him and his experience in Burma. Does anyone have any details of how I might be able to get in touch with him?
    Best wishes,
    Meghan

    Hi, Meghan,

I'd suggest sending a private message, via this site, to Eve Humphries, who in April 2012 posted that she had a list of squadron members. Could it be a list of 273 Sqn Assn members, or just a list of wartime squadron members??? Sure would be nice if George Shenton showed up on a latter-day Association list. Most of these wartime associations have packed it in, unfortunately; I can't speak for 273, however. Good luck.

  16. This picture shows 273 squadron in Mingaladon Rangoon in 1945. Shenton is third from left on the right wing. My father is front row beside the right arm of the man in the white shirt.
