    Hello all,

I have recently received my Grandfather's service records.

From what little he had told me I gathered the following:

That he had been in the Middle East somewhere as he told me some Arabic words.
That he had called in to South Africa by ship at some point.
That he had been based at Battle Abbey East Sussex with an anti aircraft unit and their job was to shoot down doodlebugs. He wore a bow and arrow shoulder badge.
We also have a photo of him wearing RAMC cap badge and shoulder titles.

So from the records I can see that he joined the RAMC in 1940 and was posted to 13 General Hospital and travelled with it to Suez in 1941. He then became ill and was in hospital quite a long time being evacuated via Durban to the UK and downgraded Category C. So all of that fits with the story.

Next is the bit I need some clarification on. The records say posted to 5 AA Coy RAMC in 1943 and then 2 AA Coy RAMC in 1944.

I understand that by the this time AA Command was split into AA Groups.

I haven't been able to find the exact make up of the AA Groups but a wiki entry for 6th AA Division for the South East area shows the establishment containing "6th AA Divisional Company, Royal Army Medical Corps". As 6th AA Division changed to 2nd AA Group in 1942 I presume the name of the RAMC element changed to "2nd AA Group Company RAMC" or something similar. Which seems to tie up with the records and with the story of being based in East Sussex. Could someone with a bit more knowledge than me confirm this?

I also assume that the actual RAMC staff where probably scattered about to the different AA Regiments within the AA Group. Does anybody know which AA units where within 2nd AA Group and which were based at Battle Abbey?

Lastly looking at war diaries as well as the AA Regt he was attached to I'm assuming this would be a good bet:

WO 177/263 War Office: Army Medical Services: War Diaries, Second World War. HOME FORCES. Groups. A.D.M.S. 2 A.A. Gp.

    What do you think?

Thanks for any help clarifying things.

    Carl
