OK, just thought I would try this, I am trying to find any photographs or associated information which applies to the 2nd Battalion, Heds and Herts, more specifically, A Company.during the period January 1940 right through to the end of Op Dynamo. My late father, William ( Bill) Weight served with them from February 1939 through to post Dunkirk while they were at Dover on shore guard following recovery from the beaches. Whilst at Dover, he voluntarily transferred to the 5th battalion, as, in his own words, the adventure of Persia seemed like a good idea,! That trip ended in Singapore and Changi. Please PM me if you have anything that you think may fit the bill. I have just obtained the Battalion records from Andy so a start has been made. many thanks Pete Weight. Milton Keynes.
There are photo's around Pete as I'm sure I've seen some of them with the BEF in 1940. I've checked my obvious books to no avail. There may be some on the Imperial War Museum's website. 430 various BEF images here http://isl.iwmcollections.org.uk/dbtw-wpd/exec/dbtwpub.dll?AC=PREV_BLOCK&XC=/dbtw-wpd/exec/dbtwpub.dll&BU=&TN=Uncat&SN=AUTO21973&SE=3217&RN=24&MR=24&TR=0&TX=1000&ES=0&CS=1&XP=&RF=resultsThumb&EF=&DF=details&RL=0&EL=0&DL=0&NP=1&ID=&MF=WPENGMSG.INI&MQ=&TI=0&DT=&ST=0&IR=0&NR=0&NB=21&SV=0&BG=0&FG=0&QS=
Andy, that link isn't working, I tried a regular search on the IWM website but cannot bring up anywhere near that number of images. How do you conduct a search as my wording is not producing good results. Is there a trick to it?
I'm just about to go to a wedding - not my own Can someone else help? Pete if you look at the link the = sign is not underlined - this happens a lot for me on this forum (never happened on the old forum).
RH Medley 'Five Days to Live' France 1939-1940. He was originally a 2/Lt in A Company transferring to 2ic C Company in March 1940. RH Medley 'Cap Badge' The Story of Four Battalions of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment 1939-1947. Leo Cooper
Good shout Guy - There's no 1940 pictures of soldiers in Cap Badge but the sketch maps are rather fine if you want to visit France. I can't find my copy of five days to live so no idea what's in that at the mo. http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/search Try the above and search for things like France 1939-1940. Once you've used it a few times you can see a few key words to search for. I can't think of the others key words at the moment.
Guy, Andy, once again, many thanks. A little more success now and I will track down copies of the books suggested and also listed on the IWM site.. Best regards. Peter
Peter, I will send you a PM with contact addresses about people who may be able to help you with your enquiries. John
Presuming it is Pete Weight you want to contact I’ve sent him a message to alert him to your post. However he hasn’t been on the forum since 2015. Forum member Alex1975uk has an interest in Beds & Herts. Steve
Hello, I would like to confirm the regiment of my a Grandfather. I do have a photo that was passed onto me by his 99 year old sister. I don’t feel I can put the photo on One but was wondering if I could privately email it to someone. many thanks
