I have searched the internet for a photograph of a 3 ton Dodge Tipper 1944/45. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have tried the Dodge website and I believe it was a WC series produced in Canada for British Army.
You're right. The internet has almost nothing....According to Les Freathy's 'British Military Trucks', The Royal Engineers used numbers of British-built ('Kew') Dodge 3 ton short wheelbase tippers referred to as the Model 80b. The nearest I can find on the net is a row of the very similar pre-war civilian versions. It was not really a military truck. https://www.flickr.com/photos/56358803@N02/6775176481 Les posts on the forum from time to time. Found this on mapleleafup http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?t=255 (read: Vanderveen) only list the following variants of the Dodge T-110 series: - 15-cwt D15 (128.5" wb): GS and Water Tank - 3-ton D60S (136" wb): Dump Truck - 3-ton D60L (160" wb): GS edit : is this a Dodge T-110 Tipper? caption says it's a T-110 https://www.flickr.com/photos/33240904@N03/4548262148/
Is it definitely not The T110L-6/D60s mentioned in Canadian production in Vanderveen? Sorry, Cross-posted with owen.
Toki, Dodge trucks are somewhat obscure and complex. There was a tipper version, T203, which is sometimes listed with the WC series but it had little similarity to the other members and looked much like the larger Dodge products. Since you are interested in a Tipper Company RASC it would almost certainly be a T110 tipper version. Built in Canada, in Windsor Ontario just across the river from Detroit, it used many US designed and manufactured components. The British used T110 3ton 4 X 2 Dodge GS and Tipper versions in considerable numbers, particularly in the Middle East and Far East. I have a film clip showing T110 tippers moving up to the Seine in 1944. Mike
Thank you all. I am writing a booklet for my grandchildren about my father's role in the war and wanted to include a photo of the type of truck that he drove. Now that I know a bit more about it, I may have a better chance of finding one.
Please find attached; Manufactured in Canada originally fitted with dual rear tyres later production with larger singles designated Dodge T110L-8 D60S These were the common Dodge tipper in UK forces service .
That last photo seems to me like an RAF Airfield Construction Unit is working on laying tarmac possibly for a runway. However in that case what would the building and the Railway vehicles be doing there? Any ideas as to location of this shot?
By chance, in the background, a view of Dodge 3ton 4x2 Tipper L5577289. The arm of service serial '583' falls just between two RASC Army Group Troops serials listed by Hodges & Taylor.
Thanks DML - Another pencilled note about to appear in Hodges & Taylor This view shows another Ariel W/NG and the 583 serial...Does it incliude the nose of one of their Dodges ? The pillion's cap badge is definitely RASC.
Following the 743 Tipper Company lead, I find that there are more photos of Dodge Tippers than one could reasonably shake a stick at ! A Teenager on Tour in a Tipper https://www.flickr.com/photos/115034624@N04/albums/72157640053106026
