Have just acquired an interesting little book from a local junk shop - a series of sketches accompanied by verse which covers the history of the HQ Coy (990) of 31st Tank Brigade. Clearly written by one of the men in the unit and presumably a copy distributed to all members of the company when the unit disbanded. The Foreward is written by Maj W C Cooke, CO of HQ Squadron, 14th March 1945. Am now interested to find out more about this unit (am aware it was part of 79th Div) and would welcome additional info, recommended reading etc. Cheers Tim
WO 171/633 31 Tank Brigade HQ 1944 Jan.-Aug. WO 171/633 31 Tank Brigade HQ 1944 Sept.-Dec. There's 14 other related war diaries. I suspect the above files will be quite thick.
Packhow in the interests of accuracy it should be noted that a Tank HQ is generally known as a Squadron - after the Cavalry style and NOT an Infantry Coy. Unless of course it was written by an Infantry battalion chap in support of a Tank Regiment Brigade as part of a Division... Cheers
