Hello! my first post with you all I am trying to establish the route taken by 39 Coy RASC (GT) prior to June 6th and through to Brussels, I know the War Diary is WO171/2632 but sadly yet to be digitalised by TNA, so was wondering if anyone could help me out? I believe the route to be Sword Beach (Queen Beach) Hermanville Colleville Langrune-sur-mer (21st August 1944) Ligne Leuze Antwerp Marseilles Ghent Brussels Wendi
There are a number of members who could obtain this information for you at a cost far less than that charged by NA. Have a look through some of the threads and see if you want to approach anyone who could help. I have used the service and it is very good and reasonably priced.
Hi, I've posted up the extracts from the war diary that I have. The 3-ton load vehicles this company used are a bit of a mystery as there appears to have a mixture of Austins, Chevrolets, Fords and Bedfords. I think they were all 4 x 4 vehicles probably because of the company's role in the early days of the assault in Normandy. I don't suppose you have any more information (or photos) of vehicles? Regards Tom
Thank you Tom, that's a great help to me. I have not got any photos just now, but if I come across any I will be sure to remember your assistance. Regards Wendi
Hi Tom First of 4. Have you ever heard of L/Cpl Mumford? these are all drawings by him, owned by a member of 39 Coy RASC Wendi
Can anyone help with this please? we are extremely interested in the town names around the frame. Are they Battle Honours or the Route?
Hi, Fantastic drawings. Many thanks for posting them up. Sorry, I haven't heard of L/Cpl Mumford though. I wonder if he continued drawing after the war. I would say that the town names will be the route that the Company took. I don't think that individual RASC companies were given battle honours in the same way as other units. The lorries landing on beaches are just British - the motor-cyclist has a British crash helmet on. I was particularly struck by the drawings of lorries on the last drawing. To my jaundiced eye, they look like Austin K-5's to me! Regards Tom
Hi Tom, Thanks for your useful comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the drawings (closest I could manage to a photo!) It did occur to me that Mumford might have drawn after the war, but can't find anything yet. Your input into this topic has been much appreciated. Regards Wendi
I think that you're spot-on with the vehicle ident, Tom. It certainly looks as if 39 General Transport went ashore with K-5s. The foreground Bedford is very detailed and the BSA M20 instanty recognisable. Is this another diary to look at in the continuing Austin 'Screamer' research ?
Hi trying to find out more info on my Uncle Malcolm J Macdonald 5123436 he is pictured here in the Leicesters. He was then in 39 Coy RASC G/T W/S Section, wounded 10th June 1944 in Colleville Normandy area. Then became part of the BAOR. I would love to know when he got back to his company. And where and when he was in Germany.
