I would like to obtain copies of the war unit diaries for my father Daniel Sheppard particularly during the Italian campaign in World War 2. He enlisted on 20th June 1940 at Llanelli with the Welsh Guards His service with the 10th Hussars began on 5th May 1941 and ended on 8th October 1946. His date of birth was 10th February 1921. He died without telling his children anything about his war service. I am visiting Italy in May and would like to trace the journey he took across Italy.

If you use the search facility of the site and type in 10th Hussars then there are several threads on them which may contain the answers you seek, then we have several members here who can copy War Diaries from the TNA, but you would need to specify which ones you need
Search results: 10 hussars war diary | The National Archives

It is assumed that you already have a copy of his service record

Thanks for the information and the link to the Archives. My brother had obtained a copy of the service record and very brief diary and has sent me a limited copy. It appears that my father arrived in Italy approximately on 17th May 1944 then the places only are mentioned Bari, Salerno, Casino, Ostia Ledo and Rome . In November 1944 Rimini and Naples then ship to Glasgow arriving 1st December 1944. He then embarks on ship from London on 2nd January but there is no information from then on other than leave being granted in the autumn/winter 1945/46 yet his date of discharge was not until 20th March 1951.
Having looked at the links the appropriate copies appear to be WO 170/819 Italy 1944 to cover the period in Italy. I may then try to trace what happened from January 1945 onwards. Did he return to Italy ? and why does discharge not take place until 1951 ?
I presume there is a cost to copying diaries both from the Archives and from the person who obtains them. Could you let me have an idea of the costs.

There are members here who can help you with the War Diaries, Drew5233 and PsyWar.Org are just two and have reasonable rates. I have used both, and both offer an excellent and professional service. To start you off here is some information from the Regimental History:

When I am at my PC, I shall add more. Sketch maps from the History can be downloaded from here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AjV9GjiO25V9jrthcsTCp2ah_Hlq0g.

It would be beneficial to see the actual service records you have as they are easier to read in context - up to you

His Army Number - 3970931 - falls within the block allocated to
Welch Regiment 3947001 - 4025000, not Welsh Guards.

I've already got the 10 Hussars 1942 diary running from Jan to Dec. You can have a copy at my normal rate of 10p per page if you donate the cost to my sons charity fundraiser.

I am remiss in mentioning, I have the diaries for 1943 and 1944, which you can have copies of on the same conditions Drew5233 posted above.

I would like to have copies of the 1944 records. I do not have the original service record. My brother only jotted down details for me. I am happy to provide the donation you request. Let me know the amount required.
