    Hi,
I'm trying to find out information about a relative of mine (my Great, Great Uncle) WILLIAM TWEDDLE (a.k.a Bill).

He served with the 3rd Bn Coldstream Guards, but sadly passed away 14th september 1943 at the age of 21. He's buried in the Salerno War Cemetery.

I wondered if anyone happened to have family that served alongside him, or photographs of the regiment?
The family doesn't seem to know much, and those that did are long gone. It would be great if you could share any information that you might have.

He was a Lance corporal, and his service number was 4866633. He came from Santon, Lincolnshire.

    Thanks
    Zoe

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

My late father served 3rd CG 1937/46 and was captured in Libya December 1941.

Your starting point ought to be applying for his service records. CG records moved from CG RHQ to care of the MOD recently so you need to apply using this link -

Get a copy of military service records

You won’t need a death certificate - just attach a copy of his CWGC certificate.

Here is a link to CG Regimental History 1920/46 that you can download -

The Coldstream Guards, 1920-1946, by Michael Howard and John Sparrow.

From his Army service number he wasn’t an original CG enlistment - perhaps he was in the TA pre war - but his service papers will reveal all.

I’m sure you’ve seen his CWGC details?

    Casualty :poppy:

    Good Luck.

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for your post. I've seen his CWGC details, and got a copy of his burial certificate. I'll get on with ordering his records, hopefully they'll be able to give us some more info :)

    Thanks

    Zoe.

I am going to be guiding a group around the Salerno battlefields on 1-4 Apr 20 and one of the stops includes the Salerno CWGC Cemetery.

If you would like a photo of LCpl Tweddle's headstone, please say and I will get it for you.

His Regimental Number is from the batch allocated to the Leicestershire Regiment.

    Regards

    Frank
