I hope you do not mind me posting of this forum. I have recently found details of my great uncle my grandfather's, Rodmond Frederick Peterson, brother Harry Peterson. DOB: 13 May 1913 born Liverpool. His mother my G Grandmother was from Hull and when my G Grandfather Peter was murdered in Liverpool the family came back to Hull. I wanted to explain or highlight why my great uncle ended up in Hull. On the outbreak of WW2 Harry enlisted into the 5th Battalion The East Yorkshire Regiment. His Regimental number was 4348060 Pte Harry Peterson. He was taken prisoner in Africa and was being transferred to a POW camp on mainland Italy. Sadly on the 17 August 1942, the ship was torpedoed in the Med by a British submarine he and a number of Kiwi/Australians went down with the ship. I have requested to the The National Archives for copies of his military record, but that could take @12-18 months and I have also requested from the MOD Medal Office a list of the medals he was awarded. Once again I have been informed it could take @12-18 months for the medal office to list his medals. I believe he could have been awarded the 1939-1945 star, The Africa star, The Defence Medal and the War medal. I am trying to be proactive in obtaining as much information regarding the 5th Battalion? I have read various posts on this site. I hope you do not mind me posting what little I have worked out for Harry. I am looking forwarded to seeing what replies I may have after posting this on here. Any help will be appreciated. Keith

Hi Kilo & welcome to the forum.

His number was issued by the East Yorks Regt from their block 4334001 - 4379000.

I can also offer is a probable date that he joined the army. This is from tracer cards of men with E Yorks numbers who served at some point in the Royal Artillery. This does not imply he served at any point in the RA, its just a source for info on near numbered soldiers.

    4348044 joined the army 20 Jun 1940
    4348045 joined the army 20 Jun 1940
    4348049 joined the army 20 Jun 1940
    4348077 joined the army 20 Jun 1940
    4348101 joined the army 20 Jun 1940

    travers,
Thank you. Also thank you for the information regarding Harry's Regimental number, linking to his date of enlistment.
The more information I can gather the better. I only say this as I am not a close/direct NOK so may have difficulty obtaining his service details from The National Archives and the MOD Medal Office.

    Hi Kilo

I notice that his service record has already been transferred from the MoD to the National Archives.
Search results: 4348060 | The National Archives

The NA link to apply for his records is here. I can't see anywhere in the application where you have to say you are next of kin etc as you used to have to do. As he died in service in the war you don't need a death certificate, a download of his page at CWGC should be OK.

    Morning Travers,

I may have mixed up one of my posts it was my application for Harry's medals as the application form has a list of types of relatives and as I am his great nephew the option was not on listed on the form so I ticked other and added Great Nephew. Regarding his military records The National Archives have confirmed receipt of my application for his records, even though he died in service I still sent his death certificate, belts and braces.

Thanks for the information it is still very helpful.
