I stumbled on this memorial on a small piece of grass near a garden centre I occasionally visit. I suspect hardly anyone even knows they are there. In case anyone is interested they are on the floor where the A650 meets Bradford Road at Carr Gate, opposite where the old Wakefield Driving Test Centre used to be.

    Hello Andy,

My wife and I visited a stately home in Bucks (if I recall correctly) a few years back and there were around two dozen WWI graves/commemorations. They were all Canadian or persons born in the USA serving with the Canadians. Didn't have a camera or iPhone with me, so no photographs, but I did enquire into background. Found out the place had been used in WWI as a Canadian hospital for the wounded/sick. These were not CWGC headstones/commemorations, nor were they tended by the CWGC. Wish I'd taken a camera; it would have been grand to do what you have done for these men remembered at Carr Gate.

L/Cpl Baker's service number is from the West Yorkshire Regiment block: 4523001-4601000.

Noticed that the 'marble' memorial contains a couple of errors (well two that I can see):

    1. Pte. G Appleyard's regiment was the K.O.Y.L.I. but the 'I' is missing; and
    2. All Privates have the prefix 'Pvt', instead of 'Pte'. Looks a tad yankee.

    Best,

    Steve.
