Does anyone know what brigade the 2nd Grenadier Guards belonged to? A search on the internet resulted in conflicting information;one said 5th Guards Tank Brigade, another, the 6th Guards Tank Brigade. Also does anyone know what the 2nd Grenadiers were doing on 6th August 1944. Lance Corporal 2617483 Sydney Ernest Hall was killed on this date. Regards Pete
2GG was in 5th Armoured Brigade in Guards Armoured Division. ( It was 4GG in 6th Guards Tank Brigade with Churchill tanks) Looked in Guards history & on 5th & 6th August they were resting before an attack on the 7th. Just looked at roll of hounour & he listed as 4th Bn
Just looked on CWGC & he listed as 4th Bn there too. CWGC - Casualty Details Where did you get the 2nd Bn from ?
Just looked on CWGC & he listed as 4th Bn there too. CWGC - Casualty Details Where did you get the 2nd Bn from ? Sorry Owen, it was a typo (too early in the morning ). You're right of course, he was 4GG. Can I amend my question to where were the 4th on this day and which Brigade? (I tried to change the heading but couldn't) Cheers Pete
Title edited to 4th Bn who were in 6th Guards Tanks Brigade as mentioned. They too were resting & refitting on that day according to the regt history. 4th Aug. 4GG ordered to Montcharivel to join up with 8 Royal Scots Fusiliers. 8 RSF & 4GG attacked & captured that village. 5th & 6th Aug, chance to rest & overhaul vehicles
Pete Thomas. Owens imfo correct, as if known not to be. I as a Gunner/op in 4GGwas flown back to UK to attend a course on the new type Sabot Ammo lasting five days rejoining 4GG Batt 10th Aug 44. All keyed up. bob90
Bob, apologies for not replying earlier. I have only just seen your post. Thank you very much for the information. Best regards Pete
Does anyone have access to the war diaries for 4GG on 6th August 1944? If they were resting and refitting on this day, I would have thought a casualty would have been noted in the diary. Any help gratefully appreciated. Regards Pete
Bare in mind he may have received wounds in an earlier battle which resulted in his death days later.
Thanks Drew, good point. I was forgetting that their isn't a Soldiers Died in the Great War equivalent for WW2, to search for cause. Regards Pete
I don't have the war diary but if you can get to Kew this is the one you want to pull: WO 171/12554 Grenadier Guards (Tank Battalion)1944 Jan.- Dec. Has anyone looked in the regimental history for you?
