This is a U.S. Army Signal Corps' photo I found
and scanned at the NARA II, College Park.

    The caption reads:

"Cassino Area, Italy. 4th Indian Division. The Indian
military cook house where a special diet is prepared by
the Indians themselves. This picture depicts the making
of the unleavened bread that is eaten exclusively."

    Date: 5 March 1944.

Photographer: Paris, 163rd Signal Photo Company.

This photo shows some of the 4th Indian Division cooking their Chupatti's as their bread as you can see in muddy circumstances while waiting for the third Battle
to start on 15th March along with the New Zealanders and the 78th Division who had been co-opted into the New Zealand corps to lend some strength to the attack - and again was repulsed with heavy casualties to 4th and the Kiwi's who were withdrawn to the Adriatic for replenishment and rest - the final Battle - Operation Diadem started May 11th when the ground had finally dried

    Cheers
