One of my Christmas wish list books was Osprey's The British Reconnaissance Corps in World war II. Not too many references to my late fathers 4th, but there is one good photo taken in Italy during the winter of 1944, before being transfered to Greece due to the Communist uprising. The photo, although not showing my father, provides me with a glimse of what he must have looked like at the time. Plenty of variation regarding the winter clothing! The Staghound provided a little more protection and firepower than the Daimler scout car. Regards Tom
Paul, Absolutely agree with you. Only the Enemy in Front. The Recce Corps at War 1940-46. By Richard Doherty is another great read. Regards Tom

Paul, Its the only book that I have read so far that gives me an idea of what my father got involved in. Regards Tom
Courtesy of a good friend I now have some copies of 4th Recce Regt War Diaries 1944-1945. They must have had some Greyhound Armoured cars also as one was a battle casualty between 23 and 31st Oct 1944, together with a universal carrier and 2x 3 tonners. 4x Universal carriers BLR (Battlefield light repair?) Regarding Staghound Armoured Cars, 2 officers and 3 other ranks qualified on Staghound armoured cars on 9th Feb 1944. January 1945 mentions taking on strength 33 new Staghounds and prior to this three being battle casualties. Regards Tom
I saw an interesting photo of a Staghound with the turret removed being used as a Command Car by Guy Simmonds. Can't remember where I saw it now - but will try and get a copy. Was it an official variation I wonder?
The turretless one's possibly called a 'Charger' Paul (As in 'Officer's Charger'). There's a book on Canuck Staghound's out from the remarkable Service publications that I'll be keeping an eye out for at Beltring, decent printed info on them being pretty scarce really: The Staghound in Canadian Service" Book Review by Cookie Sewell (Weapons of War Series)
Resurrecting threads here a bit... Just wondering if anyone knows what markings a 4th Recce Staghound would have had? 4th Infantry Division flash?
Resurrecting threads here a bit... Just wondering if anyone knows what markings a 4th Recce Staghound would have had? 4th Infantry Division flash? I have never seen a photoograph of the 4th actually showing the Markings, but all recce vehicles had a standard Recce Tactical serial. White numbers on a square halved green over blue and the exception being 43rd Recce, black numbers on square divided daigonally, yellow over green. 41 appears to be the number for Recce. Regards Tom
