    Nooooo.
255785 is his officers number nothing to do with RASC other ranks numbers.

Officers had their own numbering system.

LG entries from 1944 shows B C Balle's progress within the Royal Engineers and his being promoted Captain in 1962 (TA)

I have photos showing RE collar badges and this (poor) photo - can you identify the regiment please?

Hi Does the book say anything about the 5th Battalion in the period from 1940 until it went overseas? I am looking for locations in the UK and any other info on that period. Just found my father-in-law was with them until transferring to 1st Battalion in Ceylon, Burma and India in 1942.

    Good afternoon Idler

These maps are excellent. Thank you. Would you have the appendices to Cutler's report ?

Sorry, no. The book was posted by another member - these battalion histories are buggers to get hold of.

Jervois' "History of the Northamptonshire Regt., 1934 - 1948" has the following on the 5th Battalion whilst at home from June 1940 to October 1942

Sorry for the poor scans and the odd sizing.

    Good morning

I'm following the 5th Northants in Sicily would you be able to help?

Would you be able to scan, from Jervois, their time during the Battle of Sangro (19/11- 3/12 1943)?

If it's too marathon of a task I'll understand.

A Christmas bonus would be maps of this battle and of the Battle of Adrano ( 29/7- 3/8)

An imposition I realise but thanks for anything.

    Bas

Jervois is sadly lacking in maps when it comes to the 5th Battalion. There are more relating to the 2nd battalion but these seem to have been lifted from Wallis's 'History of the 58th'.

This is what he has to say about mid November to Early December 1943. Not a lot, I'm afraid.

This is most useful and I appreciate your help. My man is platoon commander in B Company which is referred to so it helps build his story.

    Thank you

    Steve,

Bas has not logged on for six months, so unless he has "flagged" the thread he will not see your post. Perhaps a PM to him?

Hi For some reason I missed the pages of Jervois that you kindly copied for me. I have just seen them now!! So a big 'Thank You' even if it is three years too late!

    All the best

This is a most interesting thread as my uncle began his war in the 5th Northants in the BEF..
He was on a hospital ship which was sunk at Dunkirk,
are there any War Diary pages online referring to this or the exploits of 5 Northants in the BEF?
I believe that he was in the Carrier Platoon possibly taking injured men onto the ship.
He was a good swimmer, picked up by a French Trawler he appeared one night at his family home in Swansea.
On 7th June he appeared in the Wiltshire Herald saving a youth from drowning in a park in Swindon.
He was posted to a Searchlight Regt then attended various infantry training courses.
He later joined 1st Northants, the Carrier platoon appear in the book The Silchar Track recommended by Skoyen89 in 2022.
