Is anyone able to identify this uniform please? It's a photo of my Great Uncle, born in 1902, so it rules out WW1 unless he joined up towards the end of the war. It mentions on the 1939 census that he was a volunteer dispatch rider for the ARP but I can't find this type of uniform when I do an internet search. I can't find any military records for him so I've hit a bit of a brick wall. I can see horse badges on his uniform so could he have done something with horses?
Debbie, Many of the Regiments of the British Army have had horses as part of their insignia and cap badges. The closest I could match up with from your photograph is the badge of the Prince of Wales' Own Yorkshire Regiment:
Thank you so much for your replies.........his name was George Wilfred Sparrow and he was living in Tendring {Essex} when the 1939 census was done.
The badge is the White Horse of Hanover and a number of regiments both infantry and cavalry had the sovereign's permission to use it. Such regiments usually have a title like - The Kings... The Princes... etc
