Hello, came across this site recently while researching my Grandfather. I have his diary detailing his movements up through Italy until his death. His last note was "on leave to Campobasso for approx 3 days." He was at Vasto Giradi in billets at the front. I have a picture of him in uniform on his wedding day. He has no grave, his name is on a panel at Monte. I have found some great info on here, and shall be trying to track down some of the publications mentioned on here. These are his details I've got so far. Trooper Ronald Houseley 10602196 56th Regt, Reconnaissance Corps Killed 26th December 1943 aged 21. Regards Martin.
Martin, Hello and welcome to the Forum. If you have not already applied for your Grandfathers Full Service Record, I would do so as soon as possible. War Diaries can be accessed at National Archives at Kew and several of our members copy records at a very reasonable Price. Unfortunately war Diaries tend not to Name casualties unless officers or Special circumstances, but may help confirm the movements with the Personal Diary that you have. Good luck with your Research. Regards Tom
Hello Martin Welcome to the forum. You are in good company here as there are a lot of 56 Recce's on this forum. My dad was in 56 Recce and your grandfather joined up with him. My dad has the service number next to your grandfather 10602197 . Your grandfather was in C Squadron with my dad too. I have been searching for your family for about 2 years now and so pleased you have found this site. Would you care to look at my album as I am sure your grandfather is on the pictures with my dad. [sharedmedia=gallery:albums:13] The war diaries for 56 Recce are on this site for you to look at, so no need to have them copied. Please post any pictures you have of your grandfather, I look forward to seeing them. Lesley
Hello Martin Great to have another 56 Recce on board. As Lesley said please post any pictures you have of your grandfather. Your grandfather did a Signal & a Wheeled Course, he was a Driver Op Cheers Paul
Trooper RONALD HOUSELEY 10602196 Who died on Sunday 26 December 1943 . Age 21 Son of Harry and Hannah Houseley; husband of Gladys Joyce Houseley, of Sheffield. CASSINO MEMORIAL Italy Panel 12.
Hi and thanks for your amazing replies. Here are some photos of my Grandfather Ronald Houseley. I have his diary as mentioned earlier, from Africa across to Italy.
Anserine was a farm outside Tunis where the 56th saw a bit of action and my father captured a POW. I think I have posted my Dad's short recap of this already, but here's a link of a transcript I made, which makes for a fun read. https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=3882E2E742AAB99%211884
Hi Paul, No problem, thanks for creating this thread, I don't come here enough (I did PM Tony56 to give him some insight into his Anserine question, albeit months after he posted) and I wish it was more active. This thread's community was a great help after my Dad's passing, so can't thank you enough - I believe (well, I assume) that goes for a number of members on here. Casper.
My uncle should be on the 56reece corps roll of honour. Leonard Sydney Jackson Kia at nettlecamp 12/April/1944. Cn you tel me why he is not. Jdo rourke
The only Leonard Sidney Jackson I could find was killed on 15/4/1945 and is buried at Becklington War Cemetery, Germany. He was in 15th (Scottish) Regiment Reconnaissance Corps. Is this him? http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2199167/JACKSON,%20LEONARD%20SIDNEY Lesley
You've queried this before Posted 25 May 2015 - 09:00 PM Leonard Sydney Jackson. Is not on Reece roll of honour. Died at nettle camp. Germany April 1945 The answer was that he was with 15 Recce http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/13542-53rd-regt-reconnaissance-corps-roll-of-honour/#entry671183 If you need proof which Recce Regiment he was in, you need to apply for his service records
