I have just come across this discussion on 570 Squadron. It may well be that I have "missed the boat" now, but my father Flt. Lt. Stanley Maunder, who's name is mentioned in the blog, was a pilot with them. He was shot down in August 1944, by "friendly fire" and was killed. I have all the details of his last mission together with the names of the other crew members, if anyone is still interested. I also have a few phographs of my father.

Please let me know whether this information would still be of interest to anyone.

My Grandfather, Lionel Dunmore, was ground crew for Sqn 570 - working with Davidson, Cherry Cherrington, Westhead, Hail, McCann and Crawford. I have lots of photos, including some of the entire squadron. Grandad was in touch with several of the crew (most of whom are in Canada) until he became ill many years ago. He even visited with my Grandmother (who died 2 weeks ago) and I have photos of their reunion and trip too.

I have scanned the photos and put them in a protected gallery on my website (I'm a Photographer, so that's easy for me to do). I'm looking to gather stories and put names to faces and share the photos with anyone who is a descendant of these fabulous men. There are a few bombing raid photos too. The gallery link is below (black background / white text). You can only access the gallery using this link (it can't be Googled). To add notes about specific photos, simply scroll down the screen under the displayed photo to see a comments box - and type your comment or note! Please get in touch with me if you have more information or can share other photos! My email is Sue@SueBrucePhotography.com.

Thanks Sue, I have forwarded your note to my father F/O RE Davison, who is living in Ponoka Alberta Canada (93) and remembers your grandfather "Lofty" Dunmore fondly. I also have many photos of Arnhem, Rhine Crossing, Norway. Sent you email.

Sorry better late than never if any one had any photos containing Edward James atkinson who is my great father they would be very interested to show my grandfather. I believe their aircraft was shot down while at towing a glider containing supplies for the French resistance.

    Many thanks

    Ryan

I have a bit of info regarding the crash which killed W/O Williams in March 45.

My father was officer in charge of flying at the time. Apparently there were about 8-10 Rivenhall Stirlings doing circuits and bumps with gliders, when the London smog descended on the airfield . My father told the crews to divert to Woodbridge over the r/t but W/O Williams never picked up the message.
He saw Williams’s a/c make an approach to the short runway then put the power on to break off the approach. Next thing he saw was Williams landing and going past the intersection, disappearing into the fog followed by a massive ball of flame in the direction of the perimeter track. Terrible tragedy so close to the end of the war.

    Hi there,

I know this is quite an old thread but I'm doing research on RAF Rivenhall (USAF, 570 and 295 Sqns, A Sqn GPR and the 6 AB Div Unitts that flew from there on Varsity). I'd be really keen to see the log book entries if they were available.

From what I have looked at so far I think Stirling E7 V – LK292 had the Flying Witch nose art, some great mentions and pictures in books Stirling Wings (page 204) Stirling Units WW2 (page 39 picture). It also potentially appears in the IWM footage of Operation Varsity taking off with glider (assessed on timings from Squadron records).

    Hi Mossie,

I'm doing research on RAF Rivenhall where, as you know 570 squadron were based and flew on many operations from. I'd be delighted if you would be willing to share copies of what you have, I'm hoping my work will influence a museum at the old site, ongoing work!

    Hi Mossie,

Hope you managed to get the details together about your father. Would it be possible for you to share in some format for my research?

I'm doing research on 295, 570 squadrons at RAF Rivenhall (plus other units), I'd be really interested to hear more about the crews if you are able to share?
