After the Germans had taken Waalhaven airfield on 10 May 1940, B fleet of 600 'City of London' Squadron was ordered to attack the airfield. Six planes took off, from which five did not return. The shot down aircraft were the Bristol Blenheims L6616, L1335, L1401, L1514 and L1515.
I am looking for the serial number of the sixth plane, flewn by Pilot Officer Norman Hayes and his Air Gunner Corporal Holmes.

If somebody could provide me a fragment of the 600 Squadron ORB for 10 May 1940, that would also be of great use.

Thanks a lot Peter! A very unsuccesful raid. Five aircraft out of six lost. One airplane made it back to Manston but it was so badly shot up that it was scrapped and not repaired.

B-Flight of 600 Squadron was ordered to attack the German troops at Waalhaven airfield. Six planes took off from RAF station Manston, with 13 crewmembers on board. Five planes were shot down by Messerschmitts from 3./ZG1.

Four men survived. Three of them were able to reach Hoek van Holland. There they went aboard the H.M.S. Hereward and got back to England. One of them was taken to a Dutch field hospital and was taken POW by the Germans four days later.
Seven airmen lost their lives during the raid: Squadron Leader Jimmy Wells, Corporal Basil Kidd, Flying Officer Charles Moore, Corporal Laurence Isaacs, Pilot Officer Robert Echlin, Pilot Officer Michael Anderson and Leading Aircraftman Herbert Hawkins.

    Hello All,

I have just found this site.
My wife's Great Uncle was Marcus Kramer. In 2010 we were invited to Goeree-Overflakee for the 70th Anniversary of the raid. My wife and the wife of Richard Haine unveiled a memorial on the shore above the crash site. These memorials come about due to the fantastic efforts of the Foundation WO2GO (English |). After the unveiling, there was a flypast of three Tiger Moth aircraft. This was quite poignant as this was the aircraft that Marcus was flying at the time of his death, along with that of Squadron Leader Methven. Marcus' body was never recovered although S/Leader Methven's was some time later. I often wonder if an unidentified body was recovered and buried as an unknown airman. Marcus was a private pilot pre-war.

On behalf of my wife Caroline and our daughters I am compiling as much information as I can about their relative.

    Regards

    Paul
