    Ah Jack and Drew,

i'm guilty of getting excited about seeing these posts using my memory and not referring to the paperwork i have in my file. After checking my fathers records i came across a letter from the red cross, i wrote to them some years ago and they gave me some information. He was captured on 09/06/1940 (please see red cross letter)

I have also scanned a photo you asked for and a postcard he filled in following his liberation in 1945 scan0001Len.jpg scan0003redcross.jpg scan0004pow release.jpg .

I believe my father is on the back row second from the right

Thanks for posting photo Shiplets, unfortunately my father not in that group.

The date of capture for your father was 9 JUNE 1940 according to Red Cross report, confirming Drews post.

Drew....I think I have solved the mystery of Lt H. Cook..
His name appears in D Coy nominal roll as a Private as of that date, he evaded capture and returned to UK, and
subsequently rose through the ranks to end the war as a Lt.

    Jack.

    Hi Jack,

thanks for replying sorry your father wasn't in the photo.

Been looking at the rolls for the companies posted, has anyone got a roll of the company my dad belonged to?

    Jack,

i can't see a L Shipp anywhere on 5th Buffs nominal roll. Any ideas? Was 5th Buffs a Territorial Regiment because i'm sure he said he was a TA. Could he been in 2nd Buffs waiting as a replacement at Rouen?

Shiplets, if you have your fathers service records could you post them here?
My father was in the 5th BUFFS, stated as such on service records, but not listed on any nominal roll either that I have seen.
His No 6288126, and yes, it was a TA regiment.

    Jack.

'Nominal Rolls' for Other Ranks are quite uncommon and almost never found in the diaries of Regular units. They seem to appear sometimes with Territorial papers and it is clear from those that many of the adjutants had not received pre-war training in just what should appear in a diary. Sometimes the small detail is incredible.

Whether lists were kept of names seems to depend on how 'close' the units were - if they had been together for several years and completed a number of annual camps and exercises then they were quite likely to treat the men as individuals. My impression is that those companies etc. made up of volunteers from the1939 recruiting drive are less likely to have retained these records as part of the war diary.

    Jack,

i have my fathers red service and pay book, he must have had it with him. His number was 6289128 and he was called up on 15/11/39. The first entry on the cash payments page was for 50 french francs, 'in the field' on 19/04/1940. The last payment was on 31/05/40.

I have a letter he wrote to his mother poted on 14th May, 'on active service' No 6 Company, the Buffs " I.B.D (Infantry Base Depot?) BEF franked Field Post Office 18. The next correspodance i have is a KRIEGSGEFANGEN POSTKARTE dated the 19th June saying he is ok.

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

The WO344 file for Jack Jordan has him in 5th Bn Buffs and captured at Fecamp on 9th June.

That ties in with 7th Panzer Div units reaching Fecamp on the same date. However the Buffs battalion in Upper Normandy in June 1940 was the 4th Battalion. Part of 'A' Brigade, Beauman Div.

Was he 5th Bn attached to 4th Battalion?

    Thanks

    Adam
