I am looking to identify this young soldier who appears to be 6408724 Pte R.H. Piper of the Royal Sussex Regiment. Unfortunately, R. H. Piper has not left his mark in any official documents that are available on line. The best that I can do is to record all the R.H. Pipers born between 1914 and 1925 to see if there are any leads. These are as follows: Robert H Piper. 1914. Chester Reginald H N Piper. 1916. Cardiff Ronald H Piper. 1918. Birmingham Robert H Piper. 1919 Easthampstead Robin H Piper. 1924. Sculcoates Robert H Piper. 1925 Horsham Ronald H Piper. 1925 Okehampton Robert H Piper, 1925 Horsham, is the most likely candidate geographically and would have been 18 in 1943. He might have been allocated a Regimental number just before the General Service Corps system was introduced, but this is conjecture. And help to correctly identify him would be appreciated.
Found this: Name: R H Piper Service Date: 1945-1948 Service Place: Palestine Campaign or Service: Palestine Regiment or Unit Name: Royal Signals Regimental Number: 6408724 WO 100. General Service Medal 1918-1962: Clasp Palestine 1945-48: Royal Signals | The National Archives
Tony, many thanks for your help. He clearly enlisted into the Royal Sussex Regiment but we will not know when he transferred to the R.C.S. until the service papers are in the public domain. Simon.
