70th Anniversary of the formation of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers is 1st October. Or rather the Corps was open for business on that day, must have taken a while to get everything in place.. 23rd Oct. 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Alamein.
As someone who ended his Army career as a Tech Corporal of an Armoured Squadron I can testify to the high regard in which REME was held by all who were glad to use their services. Well done REME ! Ron

A pity my old dad is not still here, he was one of the founder members but died 5 years ago. 2012874 L/Cpl HJ Gray. Ex-WO1 (ASM) Steve Gray. Dad (Jim Myles) was a driver with the RAOC/REME from 39-46. Sadly, he too is not here to celebrate the REME's 70th birthday. I shall raise a glass of something strong tomorrow. Gus

It is a terrible tragedy that a more recent member of the REME will not be around to celebrate it either. Ministry of Defence | Defence News | Military Operations | Sergeant Jonathan Eric Kups dies in Afghanistan Gus
It was a nice idea to remember the REME's 70th anniversary RDR. My grandad was with the REME from the outset too. Their talents seemed to be wide ranging, including making artificial eyes to keep eye sockets open until they could be fitted with a glass eye. I came across this note of appreciation from Major-General Tope in the Departmental Orders, dated 8 October 1944, in the 16 Base Workshop War Diary (WO 170/2957). It was issued to all ranks in the corps, so thought you might like to see it:
