71972 Norman Chetwynd ROLLO, MC, 6 King's Own Scottish Borderers: 14/09/1944

Hi Guys.

I need your help again. Everybody helped me a lot with my first search of a Canloan officer died near my home at "Lock 6" near the Kempisch Canal.
In this search I found out another officer died at the nearby "Lock 7" at the Kempisch Canal. It was Maj. Norman Chetwynd Rollo. He got shot the 14th September 1944 and died the 15th. I'm pretty sure he is mentioned in the book "Lion Rampant" (page 124 - ) But in this book he has the name "Duncan" ?
I'm trying to find out more about him, pictures etc.
I already have the diary of that day but doesn’t' mention much.

Just an aside, but my old Hockley RBL Pipes and Drums Band manager was tasked with all the interments at Geel and surrounding areas and was based there.
I can confirm that Major Rollo (A Company?) and all others were laid to rest with the utmost dignity. We have performed at the Cemetery on several occasions as there are strong bonds of friendship with Len and the good people of Geel.

Major Norman Chetwynd Rollo was born on 8 January 1918. He was the son of Major John Eric Henry Rollo, 12th Lord Rollo of Duncrub and Helen Maud Chetwynd-Stapylton. He died on 15 September 1944 at age 26, killed in action. He was educated Eton.

CWGC have his army number wrong comparing it with the war diary, either that or the diary is wrong. In July 1944 he was a substantive Lieutenant with the rank of temporary Captain and was a Company 2ic.

He joined the battalion on 1st August 1941 and became a Company 2ic on 22nd July 1943.

 

Guys.
I looked into the diarry of the 6th K.O.S.B. it mentions the death of maj. Rollo but I also want to know how many others had died that day. I can check the common wealth grave commission and it gives me a clue but can I find this information somewhere else? Just to be certain?

I used both dates as he was wounded on 14th but died next day.

In the book "Lion Rampant" from Robert Woollcombe who replaced Maj. Rollo when he died he mentions 2 KIA. So this just has to be BAIRD D 6976841 and RENTON JT 3190016. It is a bit strange they are buried in a cemetery so far away from Geel...

We are now 7 years later.... I did find a picture of Major Rollo and also was able to get in contact with his family.
I even was able to get in contact with the daughter of Sir Woollcombe, writer of one of the best books I ever read: Lion Rampant.

A while ago, together with the city Geel (Belgium) we erected a new monument at the place where Major Rollo, CO of A Coy, 6 K.O.S.B. was mortally wounded and two other ranks were killed.

The Rollo clan was present and they brought along his MC.
