Can anyone help with the war dairies of the 75th A'tank Regiment? My father was posted to them on 30th July 1944 & was with them until 17th September when he was injured and evacuated back to UK. I did find the war diaries at Kew but the page with the very date that he was injured is missing. He stated that he was bombed and his M10 was set alight & he was himself alight until he was rolled over & covered in coats to put him out! He was trained on the M10 in February 1944 and went to France at the end of July attached to a RHU before being posted to the 75th. Any info would be great Regards David Watkins
Hi Drew Yes I did check the whole file at Kew - in fact I also e-mailed the Royal Artillery Library and they too seemed to have the page that I think is relevant missing - it may be that it ha got lost but such a shame as it would put the location that my father was in as precise! The medical records for him only show when he got back to the UK. Many thanks for taking the time to respond. Regards David Watkins
Hi Danny Thanks for replying. I too have the copies that you show but I am sure that the page that seems to be missing is the one that want! As he was evacuated ot on the 17th September then it is almost sure to be that page. Do you know if the 75th have any other information published anywhere? Regards David Watkins
Hello David, Sorry to say I only have copies of the War Diaries for the 75th and I don’t know if anything else was published about the unit. What makes you think that there is a page missing ? I have noticed that in some months they omit details for certain days and that names of casualties, apart from NCO/Officers, don’t seem to be entered after June. Do you know what Battery he was in ? You could check the War Diaries for the HQ 29 Armoured Brigade, 1 Herefords and 4 KSLI and see if they mention anything for the 17th September. Regards Danny
There's a brief ref. to the 75th Anti-Tank Regiment, in the 24th Lancers' War Diary - 31/5/43 Selected Officers and other ranks of the Regiment (24th L) attended a demonstration given by the 75th Anti-Tank Regiment, RA. During the month, Squadron and Regimental training continued in Squadron camps at Canada Farm and Thetford.
