Characters such as Slim tend to acquire a number of apocryphal stories, but this story is indubitably true:

Whilst attending St Philip's Grammar School, Birmingham, he made friends with a boy named Philip Pratt. The friendship continued by regular correspondence well into adult life, to the time when Philip Pratt had been called up in WW2 as a private soldier and Slim was a general. One day Philip Pratt was called before his commanding officer to explain why he had put into the post a letter addressed to the C-in-C - if he had any complaint to make there were official channels, without the impropriety of writing direct to the highest authority. Philip coughed politely and explained that it was not a complaint, but just a cheery note to his old friend; "If you look inside, sir, you will see that it starts, "Dear Bill", and ends, "Yours, Philip". Collapse in embarrassed consternation of the Commanding Officer.

I knew Philip Pratt, and I once met Slim, although I did not discuss the story with the, by then, Field-Marshal.

In one of my airforce history groups an interesting discussion arose .

Field Marshal Slim, in his book "Defeat into Victory" writes about his taking over BurCorps in Magwe and in particular writes about flight from Dum Dum airport to Magwe in an Indian Air Force Lysander.

He talks about a young Sikh pilot of the IAF that we have been trying to put an id on. While Slim doesnt mention his name, for years i had assumed that he was Fg Offr Mehar Singh based on some hints. Now in the years since then other evidence rose that shows IAF No.1 Squadron Lysanders operating on VIP Courier flights in the area. So it could be one of the other two Sikh pilots we know who were more intimate with the area they were flying over and the aircraft type. Unfortunately no primary document exists from the Indian Air force side. No Unit ORBs, no Logbooks from that time survive.

Slim dates his flight as 12 Mar 42 (not explicitely), however another book puts his flight as 8 Mar 42.

I an trying to see if any of the original formation diaries (Bur Corps, RAF Magwe, Dum Dum , the local RAF Group etc) mention the arrival of Slim or his pilot? would any of them have by chance a copy of the DRO.Movement order that broadcast his arrival?)

A 2023 update; one prompted by recent online commentaries by one of his biographers, Dr. Robert Lyman, which I will add here.

To my surprise there are only a few threads devoted to him, some whether he was a great commander in WW2. Here are the few I enjoyed reading:

Burma Reunion 1947: Footage of Veterans and Speech by General Slim

IWM Burma Victory for the opening post

Best Generals(s) Ww2 and National Army Museum - Britain's Greatest General? on generalship

Robert Lyman's 2023 comments: 1) refers to his forthcoming work, 'The General Wondered Why: Tales of the British Empire & Army' by Bill Slim. He opens with:
The Chuck tale is about the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in WW1, from the UK to Iraq; the Indian Army do get a mention.

Link: Private Richard Chuck, aka The Incorrigible Rogue

    2) This article was first published in a 1945 issue of ‘Phoenix’, the South East Asia Command magazine. Frank Owen was its superb editor:
The whole article IMHO has several gems: Uncle Bill

From an earlier post on a different thread.

Via his substack circular Dr. Robert Lyman refers to his forthcoming work, 'The General Wondered Why: Tales of the British Empire & Army' by Bill Slim. He opens with:
The Chuck tale is about the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in WW1, from the UK to Iraq; the Indian Army do get a mention.

Today I discovered a pointer to a December 2022 article by Robert Lyman, entitled 'Providing ‘Aid to the Civil Power’ in Colonial India' by Field Marshal Sir William Slim, writing anonymously in July 1937. It made me laugh a few times.
