By the looks of it 24th Lancers was written first, then amended as 9th Lancers. Interestingly on the stained glass window (above) 24th Lancers is shown. This is the medical officers account of the first grave, prior to their removal and reburial at the Jerusalem War Cemetery at Chouain...
I think Rob might be interested in this. I've read the transcript of Dr Aitken's diary as MO of the 24th Lancers from cover to cover, and on the following page found this account of Sir Robert Dalrymple Arbuthnot's death. I'm giving a talk about him as one of our parish fallen at our Remembrance Sunday service next weekend. The Arbuthnot window at St John the Baptist Church, Nash will be specially decorated for the occasion.
It'll be particularly interesting if you find some means to contact any of his extended family, children and grandchildren of any siblings of his etc. I have often wondered if the family kept some things of his, including for instance a photo album as he seemed to me, at least, likely to have had a camera during his years with the 24L and very likely to have taken many photos etc. of their training and social events. The photograph - here - for instance - might have been one taken from a camera of his - although the picture itself was donated by one of those in the foreground of the picture. 88177 Sir Robert Dalrymple ARBUTHNOT, 9 Queen's Royal Lancers There are also details in the Regimental History - "None Had Lances" though all-in-all there is very little that I can add as little new - about Sir Robert Arbuthnot - has come to light since the 1980's when NHL came out.
As Churchwarden, I know Lord and Lady Hodgson, the current occupants of Nash Court. Lady Hodgson told me only last week at our Harvest Supper that she met Sir Robert's mother Lady Maud Arbuthnot just once as an old lady. She remembered Lady Maud sharing memories of Robert and his brother, Hugh, as boys growing up at Nash Court, although the Arbuthnot family weren't there for very long. They lived in London and West Sussex until the mid-1930s, and they sold Nash Court 1948. I know from Ancestry searches that Hugh served with the Welsh Guards and survived the War, assuming the Arbuthnot title on Robert's death. He went on to have 3 children, although I can't help with their current whereabouts.
