Even better, a piece of film showing him "in action" is kept by the IWM: SCENES IN THE ODON BATTLEFIELD FOLLOWING OPERATION EPSOM (PART 10) [Allocated Title]. A still taken from it I have attached below. For more on the 8th Rifle Brigade and its members, take a look at Home - 8th Rifle Brigade.

I think you might be interested in this part of the memoirs of Lt. David Stileman, which I received from one of his sons:

    Hello,
I am looking for more information on my great uncle, Sergeant Sidney George Read, who was killed in action on 10th September 1944. This website has been wonderful finding out more information on where he was buried. My Grandmother told me he was buried in Ypes, but that is not the case. Information gathered from this site says that he was in the 14th Platoon and part of H coy, although he is pictured with the 13 Platoon picture, Aldershot May 1944. How would I go about finding anymore information on him?
    Thank you so much!

    Hi Leah Lee,
Great to see you have found the website. See attached page of H Company's war diary, which is how I knew in the first place he was in 14 Platoon. In the 13 Platoon photo, there is a Cpl. C.F.W. Read and Sgt. N.A. Reed, so not your great uncle. I would love to have a photo of him to add to the website and to see if we can find his face on the 14 Platoon photo, which can also be found on the website. On the back, he has signed this 14 Platoon photo, as I have also mentioned below the photo (on the website), so I expect he's in it. I do hope you or your family can find him in it. If you fill in the contact form on the website we can exchange some more photos etc. through email.
    Best wishes, Ronald.

Oh thank you so much! I have clearly been a little confused. My family does have a picture of him, but I’m not sure where to find it. I will ask my aunt to look for it so I can for sure identify him.

my family didn’t really speak of him which is why I’m so intrigued to find more information on him.

thank you for all your efforts.

    Captain Nat Fiennes - 1920-2024

Recently, 8th Rifle Brigade Adjutant Captain Nat Fiennes has passed away, possibly the last living member of the battalion. An item on Captain Nat Fiennes (later Major Nat Fiennes) has been added to https://8thriflebrigade.co.uk/biographies/
