    Hmmmm

I wonder if this is his parents marriage:
    Name: Harry W Smith
    Spouse Surname: Bishop
    Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1924
    Registration district: Uckfield
    Inferred County: Sussex
    Volume Number: 2b
    Page Number: 242

    Name: Mabel Bishop
    Spouse Surname: Smith
    Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1924
    Registration district: Uckfield
    Inferred County: Sussex
    Volume Number: 2b
    Page Number: 242

If so he was born soon after their marriage - 6 months later at the most ;)

That's him, Alan. Against the odds, FB might have cracked it: 1890877 Stanley Gordon Smith who was a sergeant airgunner with 138 Sqn when he was brought down and made a POW. They've even dredged up an identifiable photo of him and his crew in 1943 (although he's been remembered as labelled as 'Sydney').

Apparently the medals are in the care of some solicitors so that mystery will persist for a bit.

Nobody can find a match for a DFM anywhere, unless there's been a typo somewhere along the line. I've tried his service number in LG, but unless thats up the creek, there's no results. Same with Flight Global. BUT!! you never know.....
