The starting point would be his Service Record. TNA have it, but is closed - they explain how to gain access on the link provided: Name: R Daniell . Service number: 6462793 . Date of birth: 4 August 1920 . | The National Archives It is 'Closed' as their procedures require an official document recording his death (CWGC entry will do) or his Death Certificate.

We always recommend applying for the subject's full service record. Yes, it may take a year to arrive - either from the MoD or National Archives (TNA). It is not available online and is the definitive record. There is nothing you can do about the wait. The records were never intended to be read today.

His number has not appeared here before today.

I had a similar message re your Gt Grandad via my Facebook page - I have sent some info in my reply. He was with the 90th Field Regiment from mid 1942, having been posted in from 117 Field Regt. He embarked with the Regiment in ‘42 for Iran/Iraq. He went to Sicily in ‘43 and was with 90th from DDay onwards in NWE. He left the Regiment in April 1946.

The 90th Field Regt. was attached to the 50th Infantry Division; so Wiki may help plot their journey between Sicily July 1943 till November 1944, when they returned to the UK and ceased operational duties. The 90th Field Regt. was assigned to 21 Army Group till VE-Day. See: 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division - Wikipedia

Hi I have just received my Grandfather's military records back today and discovered that he was the Coxswain on LCT 719 on D Day. I am trying to find out more and your information above is the first indication of which campaign he might have been involved in. Are you sure it’s LCT 19 Sairzr? And was your grandfather RN or USN?

 

Thanks for responding. It was RN. According to information extracted from the Payment and Victual Ledgers he was Coxswain on LCT 719 from 1st May 1944-30th Jun 1944

 

Ah I see. Your original post referred to 19. I’m at sea at the moment but will check my sources in a few weeks when I’m home. I’m sure others will reply before then though.

Talk about coincidence ! Yesterday a few hours before you posted, I was checking if I had anything definite to identify 719's LTIN for certain. The answer, unfortunately, was negative (hence the question mark in the list you quoted).
But there might be some leads which could help.

For example, Capt BW Burnett from 90 Fd Regt mentioned that he was in LCT 719 on D Day. If anybody can say in which Troop he was, this might help.

Right now, although I am not at sea like Steve, I can't access my docs either right now. I'll try and respond to this and your other post when I'm back.

Don't expect anything earth-shattering though...

Wow thank you. I got shivers just at hearing the name of someone who was on the same transport as my Grandfather on D day.
