1st Guards Brigade, 6th Armoured Division, 9 Corps
93590 Captain Julian Ronald MARTIN-SMITH, 3rd Battalion WELSH GUARDS

At HAMMAN LIF on 9th May 1943 Captain MARTIN-SMITH commanded one of the leading Companies.

Although subjected to Machine Gun and Mortar fire Captain MARTIN-SMITH led his Company onto the objective, then the enemy fire was so heavy that the Company was unable to advance further.

Although injured he continued to command his Company until the position was consolidated, and throughout the action his leadership and personal gallantry contributed largely to the success of the operation.
