I'm reading "Lives of Great Gardeners" by Stephen Anderton. There is a chapter on the Canadian Alexander Reford. Page 75 it says "The house and garden at Métis then passed to Reford's grandfather , a career soldier in the Irish Guards , who soon realized the place was more than his energies could maintain. In 1961 the Canadian government bravely stepped in and bought it.." Looking into his Grandfather I found this portrait when he was still in the Sherwood Foresters.
