977983 Leading Aircraftman Obed Eddy, RAFVR and the Singapore Maru

Discussion in 'War Against Japan' started by Christopher Berry, Apr 15, 2025.

  1. I'm preparing a book on Hayle 44 WW2 heroes.
LAC Obed Eddy RAFVR from Hayle was In Java captured 8th May 1942 died 28th November . Thought to have died en route on the Singapore Maru but he does not appear on any list of deaths I've found so far.. The family thought he was as they mention the ship in their remembrance posts in the local newspaper. from 1947.
Any ideas of what I'm not seeing?

  3. Truly grateful for your help.
I was dealing with the sinking of the Italian ship SS Scillin yesterday. What a disaster!
Now I have to try and find out how and where Obed died and was it on 28 November 1942 on his CWGC certificate or as his family posted in the papers the 22nd... all important info though. Thanks again.CB

There may be no solution to your question.
Here is his Japanese Index Card. Unusual in that the front does not have a red line through it indicating dead nor is a death recorded on the rear.

The date 29 Oct 42 (17/10/29) is that of his leaving Java. This is confirmed by his listing here:

He is shown here in the list of Japanese POWs compiled after the war. JA (place of death) = Java may well be just his last due to lck of info.

A departure from Java 0n 29 Oct 42 would put Obed in the 'Mystery Party' (so called as no listing for this Party exists). This group was split on arrival at Keppel Harbour, Singapore into two groups for transportation to Japan. One group embarked on the Singapore Maru and the other on the Dainichi Maru, both groups contained RAF personnel. With no information about Obed dying on the Singapore Maru, for which lists exist, my guess would be that he was on the Dainichi Maru.
(NB. Typo in #1 - Date of capture is 8 Mar not 8 May)

  5. My goodness thanks... here am I tapping away at the keys wondering what to write ... I am sure you have cracked it sufficiently for me. He must have been in the mystery group . A group I knew nothing about. What a wonderful website this is and what amazing fellows frequent it! I'm coming up to 86 and want to get this done for the 44 fellows. They deserve it! The next 2 unfortunate merchant navy chaps (father and son) drown in Falmouth Harbour.
    Thanks again CB
