Hi all, Currently researching a Private Clifford Charles Fulcher, 14206085 who died 19th November 1944 and is buried in the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery. Does anyone have information of the battalions movements from November 1944? Thanks
The battalion History ‘The Gateshead Gurkhas’ (Moses) only mentions Pte CC Fulcher in the Roll of Honour, but has his date of death as 19 November 1942. However, the CWGC confirms his date of death as 19 November 1944: Casualty . The latter is correct given the place where he is buried is in The Netherlands and not Egypt; Egypt being where his battalion was on 19 November 1942. The battalion history states: Note: words in square brackets have been added by me to aid understanding. The Island is the area on the north side of the Nijmegen Bridge, situated between Nijmegen and Arnhem. It is likely that Pte Fulcher died of wounds received in one of these two incidents. Best, Steve.
The Island was the area where the 50th Div conducted its last operations before being disbanded in Dec 44. In the first week of October 1944 the 50 Div had parried part of the II. SS-Pz Korps effort to eliminate the Nijmegen bridgehead in the southeast corner of The Island near Bemmel.
