Over the past 6 months or so I have been involved with the Canada based Project '44 Team to map the movements and activities of the 9th British Infantry Brigade during the Normandy Campaign between 6th June and the end of August in order to show where they went, why and to help place within the context of the overall conflict - see Project '44

As part of this, the Project '44 team were supplied with transcribed details of War Diary entries for:
    • 9th British Infantry Brigade Headquarters
    • 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles
    • 1st Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers
    • 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment
which they have then added on to their site at Project '44 for this period of the campaign alongside all of the Canadian units they have already transcribed and mapped as well as the locations of some other Allied and German units' locations gleaned from other sources.

As a result, it is now possible to view each unit's approximate location on a day by day basis (as at close of the day) alongside the War Diary entry for that day.

An additional benefit of this exercise is that for any given location it is also possible to vary the "Basemaps" option overlay in order to see:
    • the Geographical Section, General Staff (GSGS) maps for the period
    • Satellite View of the location using current satellite imagery
    • Aerial View of the location based on aerial photographs taken shorlty after the war (with some emplacements and bomb craters still clearly visible)
In due course, relevant geo located images relating to these units will be added to the map appropriate, as will their progress beyond Normandy through Belgium, Holland and finally to Bremen in Germany at the end of the war.

The www.project44.ca/team of volunteers is a few individuals with a very particular set of skills, skills they have acquired over a very long career, skills that make them dream for people like you if you are interested this type of thing, so if you feel Taken by interest in their work and would like to:
